Athletes

As a professional Athlete, you have reached the top levels of your profession, earn a significant income, and are frequently involved in a variety of business transactions. With this, comes the opportunity to earn a significant amount of wealth. Holding onto that wealth, however, is a different story.

Unlike the young physicians who treat these young superstars (docs who will be making a lot more money 10, 20 or 30 years down the road), athletes get most of their money up front! Fortunes are lost and futures destroyed each year by athletes who receive poor investment and financial advice from advisors who are not experienced in working with the unique needs of the professional athlete.

On average, professional athletes have 5-8 years prime playing time, during which they need to earn enough money to last them for the next fifty years! Couple that with the fact athletes who find themselves “suddenly wealthy” are often young, and have limited experience managing money.

To help ensure you maximize the financial opportunities of your prime earning years, and to plan for a secure future, PCG serves as your Financial Coach! The wealth of services offered by our firm to our Professional Athlete clients, function to help coordinate all areas of their financial lives.

Statistics

  • Within two years of retiring, 78% of NFL players face bankruptcy or financial stress (due to joblessness or divorce) and 60% of NBA players face the same dire result in five years.
  • 60 to 80 percent of pro athletes divorce at some point in their lifetimes (compared to the national average of around 50%).
  • Athletes file taxes not only in their home state but also in every state—and some cities—in which they play.
